Benefits of Marula oil. As a moisturiser and for acne What is marula oil? and what are it's benefits? a great moisturiser and more. This is an oil from southern Africa which is thought to be excellent for people with dry skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis. It also has anti-inflammatory activities so may help with moderate and mild acne. The new "buzz thing" in the cosmetics seems to be Marula oil. An Oil packed with anti-oxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E and Oleic acid. It is harvested from the fruits of the Marula tree. Traditionally, it grows in southern Africa, particularly in Namibia and South Africa. Women of the village usually extract and use the oil for skin and hair; to keep them soft and well hydrated. But it is becoming increasingly available in other parts of the world. It looks a bit like olive oil, it has a golden appearance and silky smooth in texture. Some have claimed it contains four times as much vitamin C as oranges, and oleic acid which is a powerful moisturiser that prevents the skin loosing water. Vitamin C is a proven anti-ageing compound, which is fantastic for keeping those dreaded wrinkles at bay. And the fact that Oleic acid is also in there is very exciting indeed. You can read about the benefits of vitamin C for skin in my earlier blog : Vitamin C serum article Marula oil Offcourse, very little high quality research exists on Marula oil since it is so new to the wider world outside southern Africa. But I am guessing generations of people don’t use a compound if they don’t get results from it; so I am hopeful the excitement is well founded. The great thing about Marula oil is that it is so flexible. It can be used as a moisturiser, it can be used for both skin and nails. It can even be used to prime the skin before applying make-up. It has even been demonstrated to have some anti-microbial activities so it has potential to fight and prevent acne.

Benzoyl peroxide is a popular acne medication used a peeler. It peels the skin removing dead skin. This reduces the likelihood of breakouts. And more importantly prevents complications such as scarring. Peroxide is commonly used as bleach for hair and teeth, so it's important not to ever use a peroxide product for hair or teeth on face. Most commonly benzoyl peroxide comes as a gel and wash, and less commonly as a cream. Usually it should be used twice a day, morning and night time. A lot of people compare benzoyl peroxide to salicylic acid gel/cream, and i will do a separate video on that. Check out my face book page: www.facebook.com/pharmacistformula

In this video i review Nizoral shampoo, otherwise known as Ketoconazole shampoo for dandruff. I discuss how it works, it's safety and if it is any good. Dandruff is caused when 3 things come together: 1) A microbe that’s present on everyone’s scalp called Malassezia globosa 2) Natural oilson the scalp known as sebum 3)A sensitive scalp As the Malassezia breaks down the sebum on your scalp it produces oleic acid. And if you’re scalp is sensitive to it – and around 50% of the world’s population is – your scalp can become irritated, leading to the symptoms we know as dandruff. The symptoms of dandruff are all signs of irritation, brought on by the root cause of dandruff – the microbe Malassezia globosa.More about the causes of dandruffAs your scalp becomes irritated, it responds the same way as skin elsewhere on your body so you may experience: Itching Redness Dryness Flakes How the symptoms appear Flaking is the most visible sign of dandruff and you may see them on your hair and on your shoulders. This happens as the body increases the rate at which skin cells renew, causing excess cells to appear on the scalp and flake off. While it might be the most visible sign, it’s not always the first. Itching is often the first symptom to appear and can act as a warning sign before flakes start to appear.Dryness and redness can also appear early too, making your scalp feel tight. Great little tip for minimising acne breakouts, by using this gentle antibacterial solution. This is a product which has worked wonders for me personally. I also explain why this product works in terms of the science behind it. For those interested, here is a bonus piece on the link between acne and Zinc, which i recently published on my page. Acne is one of the most psychologically scarring skin conditions. It often starts in adolescence, but usually resolves as people enter adulthood. It is usually triggered by hormones such as Testosterone or Estrogen, with diet and other factors playing a role. Off course genetics play a huge role too. I stumbled across a paper yesterday which made an interesting link between zinc and Acne. Researchers compared the levels of zinc in the blood of healthy volunteers and acne patients. They noticed those who had acne had lower levels of zinc in their blood. Not only that, but the more severe the acne the lower the level of zinc. So the conclusion can be one of two. Firstly, low levels of zinc can trigger acne. Or secondly, the process of acne eats up the zinc in the body. It's hard to tell which is true; or perhaps they're both true. I'll probably need to read a few other papers to arrive at a more firm conclusion. By the way, Some acne treatment lotions contain zinc in them.

I am a pharmacist with a special interest in hair loss treatments, and have been researching this for many years. I also worked within this industry. In this video i am reviewing Regaine/rogaine based on feedback from users and offcourse my own research. I always recommend you get diagnosed by a professional first. There are many wonderful and proven hair loss treatments for both men and women. Minoxidil (Regaine) and Propecia are probably the most famous. But other treatments such as Azelaic acid are coming through. However, there also some myths used by some companies and sellers to market un-proven products, or just to increase sales. These range from claiming their product has no side effects, to the "permanent" hair you will grow. Hopefully after watching this video you will be more informed before you embark on your journey to do something about your hair loss. And specifically, if you are considering Regaine (Minoxidil) as an option. The video will cover how to use Regaine for best results, it's advantages and disadvantages. Naturally, the opinions in this video are mine only. Take care all

In this video, we go through the federal law in the US with regard to use, possession and supply of CBD oil - the federal law in all 50 states. CBD (Cannabidiol) is a major compound in Hemp/Marrijuana famed for it's potential medicinal benefit. But the legal status of CBD in the US is slightly shrouded in mystery. In recent months, a drug called Epidiolex was licensed in the US for rare forms of epilepsy. This drug contains purified CBD. Subsequently federal agencies, such as the DEA, were forced to review their position on CBD oil use for medicinal purposes. In this video i share excerpts from an interview given by a DEA spokesperson in which he clarified the position of the DEA. The best and only licensed medicine for weight loss -orlistat With so many weight loss medicines and herbs on the market, it can be difficult choosing the right one for you, should you want to go on that path. Luckily, there is only one drug licensed for this purpose and this is the subject of this video. Off course, it is preferably to lose weight by diet and exercise. We used to measure healthy weight in terms of BMI, which stands for body mass index. It is a measure of the person's height and weight which gives us an idea if the person is too heavy for their height or not. But recently, science has moved on to using waist size because this measures fat around the vital organs which is a huge contributory factor to developing chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and strokes. I personally recommend this first step. To cut down your calorie intake below your recommended limits (you can find this information easily); and then back this up with increasing exercise. There are two types of exercises which i recommend. Firstly cardio exercises such as running, cycling and swimming. And weight lifting. Because research has shown that weight lifting promotes muscle growth and muscles burn more calories per gram compared to fat. So you are actually burning fat while sitting still. You should aim to lose around 2 pounds per week, any faster and you risk burning muscle not fat. In terms of diet, increasing protein intake and reducing carbohydrates has been shown to work extremely well for weight loss. The reason being is that protein increases the feeling of fullness in the stomach which suppresses appetite. And by suppressing appetite you eat less and therefore your calorie intake goes down. Probably the most famous high protein diet is the Atkins diet, which has a tough induction period where carbohydrate intake is severely limited. After that, the more carbohydrates are allowed into the diet gradually. Weight loss of 10 pounds per week is not uncommon with the Atkins diet; but some experts believe most of the initial rapid weight loss may be water. Recent evidence suggests some people may be predisposed genetically to be overweight or obese. However, predisposition doesn't mean being overweight is inevitable. The person still has to exceed his/her calorie intake to gain weight. And if they can avoid this then there is no reason why they can't maintain an ideal weight.

Aveeno is a popular moisturizer and beauty skincare lotion which i personally use. And it has been endorsed by celebrities such Jeniffer aniston. In this video i will tell you what i think about it. Here are some basics on emollient use. Emollients can be applied as often as you like to keep the skin well moisturised and in good condition. Ideally, this should be done at least three or four times a day. It's especially important to regularly apply an emollient to your hands and face, as they're exposed to the elements more than any other part of your body. Certain activities, such as swimming or gardening, can irritate the skin. It may help to apply an emollient before doing these. It's a good idea to protect babies' hands and cheeks with an emollient before meal times to stop them getting sore from food and drink. Emollients are best applied after washing your hands, taking a bath or showering because this is when the skin most needs moisture. The emollient should be applied as soon as you have patted your skin dry to ensure it is properly absorbed. if you like this video check out my playlist of videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcqQJk7BAF_H8UIJ5SyWB6A/playlists?view_as=subscriber

Jojoba oil is actually not an oil but a wax. In this video i am going to tell you about the three qualities which i think distinguish it from other oils. especially when it comes to using as a cosmetic. The Jojoba nut has been used by the Native American for its common name coming from ‘Hohowi’, the O’odham name for the nut. They used a paste of the nut for skin and hair care, and the whole nuts as survival food in emergencies. Jojoba oil is unique in that, unlike most other vegetable oils, it closely resembles sebum, a waxy substance produced by our skin glands, so it can act as a natural skin conditioner. It has nearly replaced animal fats in the manufacture of skin lotions and creams. As a matter of fact, this oil rode into popularity on the back of the opposition to whale oil which was the traditional base of many cosmetic preparations earlier. Jojoba oil has a slight nutty smell and clear golden color in the raw form, but the refined oil is completely odorless, negating the need for any perfuming agents when used for cosmetic and healing purposes. At the same time, it is a good carrier oil for several essential oils.

In this vide i discuss 2 safe and effective skin lightening options; and 2 promising options. People often use risky skin lightening options such as bleaching, which can cause severe side effects. The 2 safe and proven options are vitamin C serum and azelaic acid. Azelaic acid is known as skinoren cream or finacea cream. Both vitamin C serum and Azelaic acid are natural options for skin lightening. And the 2 promising products are Pomegranate seed extract and cinnamomum subavenium. I did a video about skin bleaching, here is the link https://youtu.be/YskmdUYGgaM But as i discussed in that video, skin bleaching can be harsh and risky due to its side effects. Vitamin C serum and Azelaic acid are natural products with a much lower side effect risk; and they are effective for skin lightening.

My current three best moisturisers for face and body Moisturisers are used to protect the skin against drying out. Although the skin is an excellent barrier, sometimes it dries out causing cracking, irritation and even inflammation. This video summarises my top 3 moisturisers at the moment. Specifically natural and organic moisturisers, which i believe are best. Shea butter, marula oil and Hyaluronic acid are my top 3 in descending order. I specifically used the term "dry skin" in this video rather than eczema, dermatitis..etc;; because i wanted to include everyone who suffers from the condition. So now i will give you my top three CURRENT choices for a moisturiser: Third position ; Urea-based moisturisers Urea is a natural compound in our body’s moisturising system encouraging the skin to absorb moisture. A few brands out there have this compound as part of their moisturising range. Second position Shea butter/coconut/cocoa butter Typically these are fat-based moisturisers which are great for “sealing off” the skin by forming a nice protective layer; helping the skin keep its moisture. First position Hyaluronic acid An incredible compound. Again it is compound naturally present in our skin. What makes it incredible is it’s ability to carry water. Some research has shown it can carry up to 500 times its own weight in water. So it’s like having a water hose pumping your skin! However, its not all good news. Hyaluronic acid is quite a large compound so getting it into the skin can be tricky. Sort of like trying to fit an awkward sofa through a narrow door. Therefore you really have to make sure the formulation is perfect. Notice how my top 3 are all compounds which are naturally part of our skin or compounds directly extracted from natural fruits/nuts. I like to stick to what nature has provided.

This hair loss treatment for men has been around for a while. Based on finasteride. The brands include Propecia and Proscar, but the active ingredient is pretty much the same. They work by blocking DHT, which a potent hormone version of testesterone, which miniaturizes hair follicles. Generally, Propecia is used alongside a topical treatment such as Minoxidil to achieve maximum results. And speaking of results, not everyone is going to achieve fabolous results with this treatment. It depends on how the person uses and more importantly responds to treatment. As with any treatments there are possible side effects, which i discuss in the video. Another important note is that this treatment is not for girls/women. If you enjoy this video how about you check out my other video where i review another popular hair loss treatment, Regaine/Rogaine (Minoxidil)

Sleeping problems affect all of us at some stage. Some are due to medical issues but most can be fixed with a few tweaks of lifestyle issues, and as a last result by using sleeping tablets. Melatonin is such a tablet. In this video i briefely review melatonin, but more importantly i look at how you can make your body produce it naturally. Melatonin is actually produced by your own brain to regulate your circadian cycle. But because of certain lifestyle issues this cycle can be disrupted. This video focuses on how to recover and restore this cycle. In the UK melatonin is only licensed for people over 55, because as you get older its levels reduce in the body. here are a few simple sleep hygiene issues you can follow to combat sleeping problems: Get outside during daylight hours. Spending time in sunlight helps stabilize your body’s sleep and wake cycles. Exercise during the day. (It’s best to avoid exercise or other vigorous activities within four hours of bedtime, as such activities can make it harder to sleep.) Maintain a regular meal schedule. Avoid naps during the day. Limit your intake of caffeine, including coffee, tea, cola and chocolate.

This is a custom made Marula oil with Vitamin C and jojoba oil. Marula oil Offcourse, very little high quality research exists on Marula oil since it is so new to the wider world outside southern Africa. But I am guessing generations of people don’t use a compound if they don’t get results from it; so I am hopeful the excitement is well founded. The great thing about Marula oil is that it is so flexible. It can be used as a moisturizer, it can be used for both skin and nails. It can even be used to prime the skin before applying make-up. It has even been demonstrated to have some anti-microbial activities so it has potential to fight and prevent acne. I hope that was helpful.

So many girls and women simply, and rightly, panic when they notice their hair thinning. And jump at the first treatment which they see or get offered. In this video i give you a simple treatment plan for female hair loss, to ensure that you get the best possible outcome. Off course there is no guarantee your hair will re-grow but at least you won't waste your valuable time and earnings on useless treatment. Here are some common causes of female hairloss: Genetics A genetic predisposition of hormonal balances and imbalances, along with the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are the lead causes of hair loss. Contrary to popular belief, genetic predisposition to hair loss can be inherited by either your mother or your father’s side of the family. Stress and trauma Stress produces increased levels of testosterone, which converts to DHT and interrupts the hair growth cycle. Stress and trauma can also constrict the blood supply to the capillaries, causing a lack of oxygen and nutrient uptake, as well as poor vitamin and nutrient absorption of the hair follicles. Nutrition and diet Poor nutrition, rapid weight loss, a high consumption of animal fats and deficiencies in biotin, iron, protein and zinc can reduce vital amino acid and vitamin absorption needed for hair growth. Health Thyroid diseases, as well as the side effects of the medications used to treat these diseases, are the most common health-related causes of hair loss. Medication Everything from birth control to steroids, as well as many blood pressure, diabetic and heart disease and acne medications can cause temporary or permanent hair loss Environment Environmental pollutants in the air and water, as well as exposure to chlorine, metals and minerals, can lead to hormonal imbalances that can contribute to hair loss. UV exposure and free radicals can also prematurely age the scalp cells and damage the hair shaft. Life changes Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to temporary hair loss that can last from six months to up to a year after childbirth. Menopausal women can also experience hair loss due to hormonal shifts. Ageing Unfortunately, as we age, our follicles can deteriorate and cause hair loss.
