Park Ji-Young, a 22-year-old crew member and cafeteria worker, was on duty that day. Most of the ship's passengers were with her in the ship's third-deck recreation area. The person at the helm was an inexperienced 26-year-old third mate named Park Hyun-kul. This was her first time navigating this route. Meanwhile, captain Lee Joon-seok had gone back to his quarters when disaster struck. Terrified students recalled how Park helped them find their way to safety as the ship began to sink, telling them to head for the the fourth deck. As the ferry rapidly took on water, captain Lee told passengers to stay where they were. Trusting the crew, many passengers heeded the advice and waited for rescue even as the water rose. But Park gathered life jackets for the high schoolers and got many of them to rescue boats. They pleaded for her to join them. "After saving you, I will get out ... the crew goes out last," Park told them, not keeping a life jacket for herself. Meanwhile Captain Lee and the young woman piloting the ferry scuttled themselves of the doomed ship onto the safety of rescue boats. Park went back inside. There were still nearly 300 people who hadn't found a way out. But it was too late. The ship took less than two hours to fully capsize. Those people remain trapped. Authorities believe most have either drowned or suffocated. Rescue crews pulled whoever they could from the water, dead or alive. Ji Young Park was found floating face down. She was dead. Four of the ship's crew including the captain Lee and the third mate are under arrest and will face charges for failing to help passengers. A doctor at the rescue base says the captain identified himself as a passenger after his rescue. Hoping that Park Ji-Young's name is remembered long after Lee's is forgotten, some South Korean web users are asking the government to allow Park to be burried in the National Cemetery, a place normally reserved for past presidents and war heroes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Yeonmi Park’s story: Escapee from North Korea speaks out

02:02
Meet Yeonmi Park. At 21 she looks like a typical university student enjoying the perks of living in Seoul, South Korea’s ultra-modern capital city. It’s hard to believe that she was actually born and grew up in a small port village in North Korea, along the river that defines the border between the North and it’s largest neighbor, China. Today Yeonmi is an outspoken activist, telling her family’s story about their harrowing escape from North Korea, ruled by one of the world’s most reclusive and repressive regimes. At a young age Yeonmi was indoctrinated with North Korean ideology, where Kim Jong-il and his family are treated as gods and any dissent is punished with prison and torture. The government tightly controls everything and limits citizens’ access to the outside world. When Yeonmi was just 13 years old she was invited to watch the execution of her best friend’s mother. The woman had been arrested for watching South Korean movies and sharing the DVDs with friends. She along with several others were executed by firing squad for their crime. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Child kidnapping stopped: Hero bus driver saves three-year-old from abductor - TomoNews

01:47
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA — A Northern California bus driver is being hailed a hero after he says he followed his parental instincts, an intuition so sharp it led him to stop a kidnapper from abducting a young boy on Friday. A 3-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at the Milpitas Public Library at around 10:40 a.m. Local police quickly responded, closing the library to incoming and outgoing traffic and sending alerts to all area bus drivers to be on the lookout. Tim Watson was on his morning shift when he caught sight of one of the alerts and about an hour later, the driver noticed a passenger in his mid-20's with a crying boy, both of whom matched descriptions mentioned in the police alert. Trusting his fatherly instincts Watson pulled the bus over and announced that someone had lost a backpack. "What I'm really trying to do is to get up without him knowing to look at the little boy," Watson told ABC 7 News. "So sure enough, I see the plaid shorts and red shoes. That's what really stuck out in my mind." The father of two noticed the boy's red shoes and quickly radioed police. "And that's when my own kids came to mind and I just broke down. I couldn't hold myself down. I just had to go inside the bus and reflect," said Watson. The parents of the child were too emotional to speak publicly, but were thankful to both the police and Watson for rescuing their little boy. Milpitas police detained Alfonso David Edington, 23, who had no connections to the family and is currently being held on charges of kidnapping. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Racism at Chili’s: Black veteran has free meal revoked after Trump supporter complaint - TomoNews

03:05
CEDAR HILL, TEXAS — A military veteran taking advantage of a complimentary meal at a Chili’s in North Texas had his food taken away after his service was called into question by a fellow customer. Ernest Walker proudly served in 25th Infantry of the U.S. Army, Division Tropic Lightning. On November 11, the army vet was waiting for his food with his service dog, Barack. The restaurant offers all active service members and veterans a free meal on Veterans Day as a thank you. The meal took half an hour to be served, and as Walker had to go, he asked the waitress to put it in a to-go box for him. As he was waiting for his doggy bag, he says an elderly man wearing a Trump t-shirt walked over and questioned him about his time in the military. The man, who himself claimed to be a World War 2 vet serving in Germany, didn’t believe Walker was actually a veteran. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told Walker another guest said he wasn’t a veteran because he was wearing his hat indoors. After providing his discharge papers and his military ID, the manager then told him the guest also said his dog was not a service dog. That’s when Walker started recording the incident on his smartphone. After arguing for the duration of the video, the manager took Walker’s to-go box away and told him to “have a great day.” Following the unfortunate exchange, Walker posted the video to Facebook, and the story has since gotten back to Chili’s, who have responded saying the situation has been escalated to the highest levels of the company. So far, Walker hasn’t yet been contacted by anyone at Chili’s or its ownership group, but the two sides are expected to meet this week. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 01:27
PALMYRA, SYRIA — A transcript of the final communications between soldier Alexander Prokhorenko and Russian Special Forces has been released, detailing the final moments before his called in his own death, trapped in ISIS territory. Prokhorenko was stationed near Palmyra, Syria, in charge of directing airstrikes on ISIS targets. Alone, he suddenly realized he was dangerously low on ammunition and surrounded by terrorists, with no possible escape route. He radioed his commander to communicate his dire situation, and instructed him to go ahead with airstrikes, taking out ISIS jihadists along with his own life in the resulting attack. According to the transcript, Prokhorenko's words were "I am surrounded, they are outside, I don't want them to take me and parade me, conduct the airstrike, they will make a mockery of me and this uniform." His commander refused, ordering Prokhorenko to get to safety before any such command would be ordered. The brave Prokhorenko told him "I want to die with dignity and take all these bastards with me. Please, my last wish, conduct the airstrike, they will kill me either way." His commander acknowledged his plight, ordering in the airstrikes, and sealing Prokhorenko's fate. In his final transmission, he thanked his commander, said he had "the best wife in the world," and was serving the nation he loved. His wife, Ekaterina, was reportedly unaware that her husband was even serving in Syria. They'd been married only 18 months, and reports indicate they were expecting their first child. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ocean cleaning machine: Australian surfers quit jobs, invent Seabin to clean up ocean - TomoNews

01:25
PERTH, AUSTRALIA — Two Australia surfers are gaining the attention from investors around the world for their invention of a device that helps clean the ocean, according to Australia's ABC News. ABC News reports that Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, who are best friends, became frustrated over the amount of trash that was floating in the ocean. They decided to quit their jobs to come up with a sustainable solution to the problem of ocean pollution, and invented the Seabin. The Seabin is an automated rubbish bin designed to be mounted on marina docks to help clean the water. According to the duo's company website, the Seabin, which is built from recycled materials, is mounted to a dock and connected to water pump that is powered by an source on the shore. The pump pulls water through the Seabin, thus bringing all the floating rubbish and debris in the water into a natural fibre bag inside the device before water is pumped back out. The floating debris is captured inside the Seabin, and water flows out through the bottom of the bin and pulled up into the pump on the dock. There is also an option to attach an oil and water separating device to the water pump to clean the water before it is returned to the ocean. "It essentially works as a similar concept to a skimmer box from your pool filter. But it's designed on a scale to work and essentially attract all that rubbish within a location within a marine harbour," said Seabin spokesperson Richard Talmage, as quoted by ABC News. ABC News reports that the duo designed a prototype of the bin in Perth before taking it to market in Mallorca in Spain, a marina capital of Europe. A crowdfunding effort has already raised $50,000 for commercial production of the Seabin, and a video of the device has attracted more than 10 million hits online. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser propulsion: NASA's laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews

01:41
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA — NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that's capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Boeing 787 Dreamliner: Secret rest cabin for pilots and flight attendants revealed - TomoNews

01:41
CHICAGO — The secret compartments where cabin crew rest on board long-haul flights have been revealed in photos online. Photographs of secret rest cabins for pilots and flight attendants on Boeing’s flagship 787 Dreamliner were published by Australian website News.com.au. On a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the pilot’s rest cabin is usually positioned behind the cockpit and above the first class compartment. The stairway is disguised behind a security-coded door. The cabin usually has one business class seat and two bunk beds, separated by thick curtains to give the pilots a small amount of privacy. The rest cabin for flight attendants is usually located at the rear of the plane, just above the economy passenger compartment. Depending on the design of each plane, a compartment can usually accommodate at least five flight attendants. Even though some crew members complain that it feels like sleeping in a coffin, posters commenting on the story on Twitter wondered if similar rest cabins could be designed for passengers too. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Giant sinkholes near Wink, Texas are expanding, on the verge of catastrophic collapse - TomoNews

02:18
WINK, TEXAS — Satellite images show that two massive sinkholes near Wink, Texas are growing, and that more sinkholes are forming nearby, according to geophysicists at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, who reported their findings in the journal Remote Sensing. The sinkholes, named Wink 1 and Wink 2, are located between the small towns of Wink and Kermit in West Texas. The scientists said the sinkholes are unstable and subsiding at an alarming rate. More sinkholes could appear in the future, and they could collapse into one giant sinkhole. A collapse of the sinkholes, because they are near two towns as well as oil and gas facilities, could be catastrophic, the scientists warned. “This area is heavily populated with oil and gas production equipment and installations, hazardous liquid pipelines, as well as two communities. The intrusion of freshwater to underground can dissolve the interbedded salt layers and accelerate the sinkhole collapse,” Jin-Woo Kim, leader of the study and research scientist at Southern Methodist University, said in a statement. Wink 2 is about 3 kilometers from the town of Wink, which has a population of 940 people. Wink 1 is about 6 kilometers from the town of Kermit, which is home to 6,000 people. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. The city, a unique urban experiment, housed about 50,000 people in just 300 buildings, which were crammed together into a living space that followed its own set of laws. Governed by the Chinese mafia known as 'the Triads', the city became famous in the 1980s for its brothels, casinos and opium dens. Living conditions were squalid, with cramped and dirty spaces, no direct sunlight, patchy or non-existent electricity, and no garbage collection. Nevertheless, the city's population grew fivefold in just 40 years, from 10,000 after World War II, reaching 50,000 people by 1990. Rent was cheap, with an average of just HKD35 a month (about US$4 today) and no taxes were charged or paid. It was therefore very attractive for doctors and dentists and manufacturers who could practice without licenses, or people who could not afford to live elsewhere. The city's unique political status and anarchic conditions, however, made it an embarrassment for the British government, who after a difficult eviction process, started tearing it down in 1993. The demolition ended in April 1994. A year later, the place was transformed into a Qing Dynasty style garden. This animation recreates the historical process that lead to the creation of this fascinating city, and eventually to its disappearance. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Robbery fail: Armed man makes hilarious attempted convenience store hold up in Bendigo, Australia

01:05
Calling bullsh*t on someone who has a gun pointed at your head isn't normally the best move. But that's what one ballsy Australian shop clerk did when a masked man strode into his store and demanded money. This crook's plan to rob a convenience store in the small town of Bendigo in Australia didn't quite go to plan. The store's security camera captured it all: It began looking good for the masked idiot; he walked to an empty store. But moments later night shift clerk Steve Ewart returned back to his post, looking cool as ice after just six weeks on the job. The robber demands he hand over the cash. Unlucky for him, Ewart is a gun enthusiast and instantly recognised the man's weapon. It's a cap gun replica of a design from the 1960s — completely harmless. Ewart tells the masked man "It's not gonna happen", and whatever was said, it clearly didn't take much. Realizing that the jig is up, the intruder is at a loss as to his next move. And Ewart instantly becomes an internet hero. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Open carry stand off: Gun owner stares down three cops in Connecticut Subway store - TomoNews

02:53
BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT — An open-carry gun owner who recorded video of police confronting him inside a Connecticut Subway store on Tuesday later posted the clip online in an incident that is sure to spark debate. The video opens with the gun owner being repeatedly asked by one officer to show his permit. The gun owner politely declines each request, saying he is acting in accordance with the law, while insisting he only wants to buy a sandwich. Eventually, the officer's superior enters the restaurant and tells the man they have received a complaint. While they continue to argue the technicalities of the state's gun laws a third officer arrives on the scene. The store owner then tells the gun owner he is refusing to serve the man, who reluctantly leaves the store. He then tells the officers he is going to Dunkin Donuts before calling them "dickheads." A second video posted to LiveLeak shows the gun owner and the third policemen arguing in a different location. During the conversation, the police officer admits that although he cannot order him to put his gun away and cannot order him to present your permit, but a business owner who is uncomfortable with him being in the store has the option to refuse his business. The gun owner then accuses the cop of harassing people for not breaking the law and asks him to go and find some real criminals. According to an article in the New Haven Register it is legal to carry a firearm in public view in Connecticut, although with a few caveats. In the article state police Lt. J. Paul Vance says, "If you have a permit to carry, you can carry a handgun on your person as long as it doesn't cause annoyance or alarm." While state police training bulletin no. 2013-01 says there is no statute which makes it illegal for someone with a valid pistol permit to openly carry unless it creates a 'breach of peace.' Local open carry advocates, meanwhile, dispute the definition of a 'breach of peace,' saying people 'feeling uncomfortable' doesn't qualify. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

01:38
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Space elevator would climb incredible 20-kilometer tower in ambitious Canadian plan

01:42
PEMBROKE, ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian space company wants to build a space elevator that reaches 20 kilometers high. The company is called Thoth and the concept is called the Thoth X tower. The idea is to build a tower with reinforced inflatable sections. The middle is hollow. An elevator car would encircle the tower until it reaches the top. Thoth estimates the tower would cost $5 billion to construct. As a demonstration project, it would build a precursor tower measuring 1.5 kilometers tall. One feature of the project is the wind farm about three quarters of the way up. The 50 turbines could produce 1 gigawatt of continuous energy. That’s enough to power about 700,000 homes. The main purpose of the tower is to provide a take-off and landing platform for spacecraft. If your aircraft takes off at a 20 kilometer altitude, you can get to space in a single stage without the need for additional fuel stages. Thoth estimates this would save 30% on energy costs. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Teen arrested after rooftopping at 1 World Trade Center

01:22
A 16-year-old New Jersey boy was arrested for criminal trespass after breaking into the construction site of 1 World Trade Center and climbing up to the top of the building early Sunday morning in New York. Justin Casquejo of Weehawken managed to evade security and climb to the spire of the Freedom Tower, spending more than a hour on the building. Casquejo, who is a parkour enthusiast and no stranger to scaling tall buildings, wriggled through a foot-wide hole in the fence around the site. He got to the sixth floor through the scaffolding, then took an elevator to the 88th floor. From there, he took the stairs to the 104th floor where he slipped past a sleeping security guard. From the rooftop he made his way to the spire on a ladder. At the top of the building, he took photographs, then eventually worked his way back down. He was arrested on his way out at about 6 a.m. and was later charged with one count of criminal trespass in the third degree and one count of trespass. He was released without bail. Casquejo's stunt called into question the effectiveness of the building's security system. The completed building will have a system estimated to cost $40 million. The security guard who let Casquejo get by has been fired. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Eyeball tattoo: Model might get eye removed after eyeball tattoo goes horribly wrong - TomoNews

05:54
ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian model could be losing one of her eyes after a botched procedure left it swollen and purple. The Washington Post reports that months ago, Catt Gallinger had her sclera stained by a tattoo artist who was also her then-boyfriend. The artist was horribly inexperienced. He didn't mix the ink with saline, and used a large needle instead of a small one. The injection went too deep into the eye, delivering too much undiluted purple ink in one go, and resulting in an infection. Gallinger felt intense pain shortly afterward, and began leaking purple ink from her eye. She was prescribed antibiotic eye drops, which only helped spread the infection. Soon, a clump formed around her cornea and her eyes swelled shut. Doctors were supposed to operate on the 24-year-old so they could cut out the lump, then do an amniotic tissue graft to replace lost tissue. But when Gallinger attempted to go in for surgery without sedation in November, she suffered the worst panic attack of her life. The missed operation has put her at a higher risk of eye loss, and though sedated surgery is still a possibility, she claims she's now considering eye removal. Gallinger has been open about her ordeal, and hopes it will serve as a cautionary tale to anyone wanting to get similarly risky procedures done. The Ontario government has since added a ban on cosmetic eye tattoos to avoid more cases like Gallinger's. Airports of 2040: This is what airports of the future might look like - TomoNews

01:42
LONDON — A U.K. company has released a concept of what airports might be like by the year 2040, and they may be a lot more efficient and passenger-friendly than the ones now. According to the company, passengers will be expected to check-in via self-service desks, which include biometric scanners that can scan passengers’ facial features, iris patterns and fingerprints in order to verify their identities. After check in, a biometric token will be issued and stored in the passenger's smartphone that serves as a boarding pass and ID. Luggage can be dropped at drop-off points. Laser molecular body scanners can detect even tiny-quantities of dangerous materials in passengers’ clothing or their luggage without the need for a body search. Passengers may buy duty-free goods from virtual shopping stations and have the goods delivered to their homes. However, passengers can still get help from virtual assistants when the airport enters self-service phase. Airport control is likely to be operated remotely outside the airport, with staff monitoring live video footage of the airport, similar to the system introduced Sweden. Other technologies, such as biometric scanners, are currently being trialled at Heathrow and Schiphol airports. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future green technology: new solar panels could generate electricity from raindrops - TomoNews

01:28
YUNNAN, CHINA — Scientists in China are producing solar panels that can produce energy from the last source you'd expect — rainwater. In a study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, researchers in China introduced a new type of solar panel that adds a layer of graphene, or carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure, to dye-sensitized solar cells. A flexible layer of indium tin oxide and plastic is included underneath. Graphene has unusual properties that allow electrons to move freely throughout the entire layer. According to the researchers, rainwater contains positively charged ions like ammonium, calcium and sodium. When water binds to the panel's surface, a double-layer of positive ions and negatively charged electrons is created, which ends up producing a voltage and current. Tests of the new solar panels have been able to produce hundreds of microvolts, which is small even compared to a standard AA battery, reports Quartz. The solar-to-electric energy conversion stood at about 7 percent, which is much lower than the 20 percent energy conversion achieved by the best solar panels on the market. So there's a long way to go before the new solar panels become more widely used. But more efficient future versions could mean big things for the solar industry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Poor shaming: 100 kids banned from New York carnival as friends who paid $10 ticket play - TomoNews

01:38
NEW YORK — A public school principal in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York is taking some serious heat from everyone from parents to politicians over her decision to ban 100 kids from a school carnival because their families could not afford the $10 entrance fee. Principal Joan Monroe reportedly decided that allowing the kids who did not pay to enter the carnival fun area would be unfair to the more affluent children who were able to afford the fee. Reports in the New York Post said many of the children who were not allowed to attend were from immigrant Chinese families and instead of enjoying a day of school-sponsored fun, they were required to sit in an auditorium instead. Teachers from the school reported many of the children wept hysterically as they were unable to understand why they were not allowed to enjoy the event, which included a bouncy castle, inflatable slides, kids rides, food, drinks and a DJ playing children's tunes. The school principal later allegedly made a list of all the parents that did pay the entrance fee and send them gift bags. The incident caught the attention of the local school board, politicians and the president of the company that set up the carnival attraction. The company's president, Gary Pincus, said his Send in the Clowns Entertainment company would happily put on a free party for the banned kids, explaining he found it unacceptable that children from low income families were turned away. Other establishments and companies have also offered to host free events for the children that were not permitted to attend. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Sea lion jumps on fishing boat, gets rewarded with huge fish

01:21
Who knew sea lions were so fast? Apparently, an adult California sea lion weighing 440 pounds and measuring seven feet in length can reach a top swimming speed of 13.4 miles per hour. So it was a bit of a surprise to see this California sea lion chasing a fishing boat off the coast of Mexico near Rayo, Loma Del Sol. The sea lion is seen swimming fast in the boat’s wake. The humans on board open the back door, allowing the sea lion to board. What happens next is truly amazing. The sea lion is rewarded with a huge fish. It’s almost as though it knew what to expect for its efforts. Treat in hand, the sea lion bids farewell and quickly makes its way back into the ocean. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser can turn your brown eyes blue permanently with a quick, 20-second procedure - TomoNews

01:10
LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA — Southern California inventor Gregg Homer says he and a team of ophthalmologists have developed a procedure that can surgically turn brown eyes blue. Brown-eyed people actually have blue irises, but the blue is obscured by a layer of brown pigment. Homer explained to CNN that if the layer of brown pigment is not there, then light can enter a part of the eye called the stroma. Once light scatters inside the stroma, only the light with the shortest wavelengths — blue light — is reflected back. The relatively new, 20-second laser procedure removes the superficial layer of brown pigment by causing the eyeball to shed pigments that will never regenerate. People who undergo the surgery won't see a change immediately as the it takes several weeks for the eyes to remove the dead pigment layer, CNN reported. The surgery is currently undergoing human testing in Costa Rica and Mexico through Homer's company Stroma Medical. Currently there are no known long-term adverse effects of the procedure. But Homer has said it's too early to say for sure. The procedure will cost around $5,000, but only if the procedure is allowed in the United States. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Largest indoor vertical farm uses 95 percent less water and produces more per square feet -TomoNews

02:17
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — The world’s largest indoor vertical farm is well on its way to producing millions of pounds of food a year while using less water. Last December, AeroFarms Inc. secured $20 million in a Series B round of venture funding, paving the way for its 70,000 square foot facility in Newark, New Jersey, which the company says has the potential to produce 2 million pounds of food a year. Ground was broken on the facility last year and it is now nearing completion. It houses an efficient “aeroponic vertical farm” system that uses 95 percent less water than conventional commercial field farms and 40 percent less than hydroponic farms. The farm uses no sunlight or soil. Instead, the plants are housed on shelves and sprout out of a cloth medium made of post-consumer, recycled plastic. Each cloth takes 24 plastic water bottles out of the waste stream. An aeroponic system mists the plant roots with water, nutrients and oxygen. The closed system allows the farm to use less water. An LED lighting system is programmed to create a specific light recipe for each plant, giving the greens the exact spectrum, intensity and frequency they need for photosynthesis in the most energy-efficient way possible. The programmed lights also allow farmers to control the size, shape, texture, color, flavor and nutritional content of the foods produced. The cloth medium separates the plants from the nutrient-rich mists, allowing for fresh, clean and dry produce to be harvested. Once harvested, the cloth medium can be fully sanitized and reused on new crops. Utilizing the aeroponic and LED systems, the scientific farmers can monitor all the macro- and micronutrients of each plant, allowing AeroFarms to grow a plant in half the time of a commercial farm and with more productivity per square foot. They also tweak and track changes to allow for further improvements to the system. Currently, AeroFarms has two facilities with the larger 70,000 square foot building nearing completion. The AeroFarm system is also customizable. AeroFarms aims to have 25 facilities around the world in five years. The company hopes to build farms in different sizes and configurations to grow food in varied locations with the most efficient yield per square foot, no matter the space. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ATM skimming: How to spot an ATM skimmer - TomoNews

01:35
NEW YORK — This animation explains the practice of automatic teller machine (ATM) skimming, a common form of fraud that involves a compromised ATM that allows criminals to access bank accounts. According a survey published in April 2016, such incidents increased 546% from 2014 to 2015 in the United States. The data came from financial analytics company FICO and FICO Card Alert Service software, which also states that 60% of the incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. ATM skimming usually employs two separate components. First, a fake card reader is fitted onto the ATM’s card slot. It scans and stores the information on the card’s magnetic strip as it slides through. Then, a pinhole camera hidden on or near the ATM records the PIN entered on the keypad. Alternatively, a fake keypad is placed on top of the real one to record the digits entered. To avoid becoming victim to skimming fraud, one must check for any objects mounted on the ATM or near it. Comparing the ATM being used to another nearby can help spot suspicious differences. Examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see whether they are securely attached. Feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check whether it was placed on top of a real one. The research also reports that 60% of incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. You might want to avoid using ATMs in malls, for instance, and stick with those located outside or inside your bank. According to PCMag, one should examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see if they are securely attached. Also, try to feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check if it was placed on top of a real one. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Man proposes with 840 Rubik's cubes of dream girl's face, but woman says, 'no' - TomoNews

01:14
HONG KONG — A man has found a creative way to propose to his love using Rubik's cubes. Unfortunately, his proposal was denied. Tong Aonan, a mechanic from the northern Chinese city of Shenyang, solved 840 Rubik's cubes to create a portrait of his dream girl, a next door neighbor. Aonan spent two months planning the 2.1-meter high by 1.4-meter wide mosaic, which he drafted on Photoshop. He had $460 worth of Rubik's cubes sent to his apartment, solved them all, then spent 20 hours over three nights to complete the portrait, which he stacked in a wooden frame. After proposing and being rejected, Aonan shared his tale on social media. While many questioned why someone would turn down such a geeky yet adorable proposal, Aonan has no hard feelings. He still keeps the mosaic in his apartment … but has said he's figuring out how to move it. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Self-defense shooting: Uber driver shoots dead armed robber in Florida - TomoNews

08:05
AVENTURA, FLORIDA — An Uber driver turned the tables on an armed criminal, fighting back and possibly saving both his and his passenger’s lives. WSVN reports that the driver had picked up the passenger from a condo in Aventura, Florida just before 6 a.m. on Sunday. The two were on the William Lehman causeway en route to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport when a Dodge Caravan minivan carrying two people abruptly cut them off. A man jumped out of the vehicle and aimed two guns at the Uber driver, demanding he hand over his belongings. Instead, the driver pulled out his own weapon and fired shots at the suspect. Seeing his accomplice dead, the minivan’s other passenger got behind the wheel and quickly drove away. Police later located the vehicle, and are reportedly questioning a person of interest. Whether or not it’s one of the suspects is unclear. The Uber driver was revealed to have a concealed carry permit, and will likely not be charged. His Uber driving days might be coming to an end though, since the ride-sharing app expressly prohibits drivers and riders from carrying firearms when in a vehicle. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

You idiot! Stupid tourists' photo op damages 800-year-old stone coffin - TomoNews

07:22
SOUTHEND ON SEA, UK — An ordinary day at a museum in the UK went horribly wrong when a family's failed photo op damaged an 800-year-old coffin. According to the BBC, on August 4, a family was visiting Prittlewell Priory[e] Museum in Southend-on-Sea. Hoping to snap a morbid photo, the parents reportedly reached over an exhibit barrier to put their child inside an 800-year-old ancient sandstone coffin. In the process of picture-taking, the offending family managed to knock off a chunk of the sarcophagus[f]. The family did not say a word and fled the scene, but were caught on the museum's surveillance cameras. According to the conservator, the coffin was found on the grounds of the monk's residence in 1921 and has been displayed in the Prittlewell Priory Museum ever since. It used to contain a skeleton that the museum says could have belonged to a senior monk, so arguably, it is a valuable artifact. In response to the photo-op incident, Prittlewell Priory[g] Museum's conservator Claire Reed said the staff was "shocked and upset", but added that the damage was repairable. The museum said they did not expect people to actually get into the artifacts, and they plan to completely enclose the stone coffin in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Google autonomous vehicle: how do Google's self-driving cars work? - TomoNews

02:01
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA — A Google self-driving car finally was the cause of a crash on Valentine's Day after driving more than 1.3 million miles since 2009, reported Wired. No one was hurt and the damage was minimal, but the crash shows that companies developing the technology still have a ways to go before autonomous vehicles are actually commonplace. In mid-February, as it was driving on a three-lane road in Mountain View, California, a Google self-driving car trying to merge into the center lane hit a public bus. The car had expected the bus to yield. In a statement issued on Monday, Google says it "bears some responsibility" in last month's crash, reported Reuters. In the same statement, Google says it has reviewed the crash and made some changes in their cars' software to prevent similar incidents. Unlike human drivers who can react quickly to unexpected behavior or obstacles on the road, autonomous vehicles aren't always able to do that yet. This is just one of the few important wrinkles Google and other tech companies testing autonomous vehicles need to smooth out. Another flaw with Google's cars is that they require the roads they're traveling on to be precisely mapped out, otherwise the vehicle is unsure of how to behave. These maps are extremely detailed digitizations of the physical world, where things like even the height of every single curb is measured out. However, in general the technology is well-developed and companies have been running tests on the cars for years. Before February's incident, Google reported that its driverless cars had only been involved in 17 accidents, all of which were caused by human error. What allows self-driving cars to be such "careful" drivers is the combination of GPS systems, cameras and various sensors that tell the cars where they're going, how to get there and what's around them at all times. The autonomous vehicles use GPS to match their position with customized Google maps. This allows the cars to select a starting point and an end point, as well as to choose the best routes to take. Radars in the front and back of the cars keep track of other vehicles on the road. The LIDAR sensor rotates 360 degrees and detects the distance between the autonomous vehicles and surrounding objects. A video camera behind the front windshield is able to read road signs and traffic lights. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Biogas: Human waste turned into clean power in Cameroon innovative clean energy project - TomoNews

01:27
BUEA, CAMEROON — Two towns in Cameroon have installed biogas systems to turn human waste into sustainable energy that can provide fuel and electricity for local communities. The project was initiated by Bioenergy-Cameroon, a non-governmental youth organization. Local students, especially female students, are trained on how to install and maintain innovative technology systems such as solar power and biogas mechanisms. According to Reuters, the system includes a septic tank, which is connected to a bio-digester at individual households. Human waste placed in the septic tank is converted into biogas inside the bio-digesters, which release energy into people’s homes for cooking and lighting. Reuters reports that more than 3,000 households and local schools in the towns of Buea and Bamenda have installed the biogas system. The Center for Environment and Development, an NGO in Cameroon, estimates that the biogas project may reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the vicinity by up to 60 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese billionaire hiding 6% of world’s aluminium in Mexico desert to game NAFTA - TomoNews

01:39
SAN JOSE ITURBIDE, MEXICO — One of China’s richest men has been linked to a massive stockpile of aluminum in the Mexican desert that U.S. aluminum executives say is part of a scheme to game the global trade system, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The stockpile was discovered two years ago when aluminum executive Jeff Henderson hired a pilot to shoot aerial photos of a factory near the town of San Jose Iturbide, 500 miles south of the Mexican border with Texas, the Wall Street Journal reported. There, the pilot found a stockpile of nearly one million metric tons of aluminum, or roughly 6 percent of the world’s total inventory, according to the the Wall Street Journal’s report. Rerouting Chinese aluminum through Mexico into the U.S. allows Chinese companies to benefit from the North American Free Trade Agreement between Canada, Mexico and the U.S., which eliminates most of the tariffs on products traded among the three countries. According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese billionaire Liu Zhongtian, the chairman of China Zhongwang Holdings, has denied the allegations. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Middle East water crisis: UAE plans man-made mountain to increase rainfall - TomoNews

01:25
ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The United Arab Emirates is considering building an artificial mountain to increase rainfall and address the country's water shortages. The International Business Times reports that according to the UAE's Federal Water and Electricity Authority, an average resident uses an estimated 550 liters of water daily — almost two to three times the international average of 170 to 300 liters. The high consumption is especially problematic as water in the region is in very short supply due to the arid climate and naturally low precipitation rates. Arabian Business reports that the government has already turned to artificial weather modification. In 2015, $558,000 was spent on cloud-seeding. In February of the same year, the U.S.-based University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) received $400,000 in funding to produce a development plan for a man-made mountain. UCAR is in the early stages of the project. It is collaborating with the National Center of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) in a modelling study to evaluate the effects building a mountain would have on the weather, and what height, width and location would be best. Mountains force air to rise up into the atmosphere, where it cools and condenses into clouds. The clouds then produce rain or are seeded to stimulate precipitation. But cloud seeding can have undesirable outcomes, such as too much rainfall or none at all. Due to the rain shadow effect, an artificial mountain can inhibit rainfall on one side, causing that area to become more parched, according to Discovery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. NASA’s New Horizons space ship only 2 years away from its next target after Pluto flyby - TomoNews

07:27
SPACE — NASA’s New Horizons mission is just two years away from its next target, a small Kuiper Belt object that orbits nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto. New Horizons is scheduled to fly by 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, making it the most distant object humans have ever explored. 2014 MU69 measures between 25 km to 45 km across. Scientists are not sure how bright the object is. Its albedo reading, the measure of how much light reflects from a surface, may be 0.04 or slightly brighter. By comparison, Pluto has an albedo reading between 0.49 to 0.66, while Mars has a reading of 0.15. New Horizons is currently speeding at a velocity of 14.32 km per second relative to the sun. It is almost halfway between Pluto and its next target, a Kuiper Belt object called 2014 MU69. New Horizons was designed to fly well past Pluto. It carries extra hydrazine fuel for a Kuiper Belt object flyby and its communications system is designed to work from far beyond Pluto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. 3D printed battery: new smart inks to produce lithium-ion microbatteries

01:21
Originally published on January 03, 2014 A new kind of "smart ink" developed by Harvard scientist Jennifer Lewis, head of the university's Lewis Lab, could enable traditional 3D printers to print tiny battery electrodes the size less than a human hair. To make the ink, nanoparticles of lithium titanium oxide are added to a vial of deionized water and ethylene glycol. Ceramic balls are used as agitators to break down the particles. The mixture is spun for 24 hours, after which the balls and larger particles are removed using filters and a centrifuge. The resulting ink is placed in a syringe, which is then inserted into a high-pressure dispenser housed in a traditional 3D printer. The custom-made syringe's nozzle tips, as small as one micrometer wide at the opening, allow precise patterning. The ink is solid under normal conditions, but liquefies under high pressure, so it returns to solid form once it leaves the syringe. The ink is used to print the battery's anode and cathode layer by layer following digital instructions. Finally, a case filled with electrolyte solutions encloses the electrodes to create a working lithium-ion microbatteries. Using this technology, microbatteries could be in between other components to help reduce the size of the gadgets. The microbatteries could supply electricity to tiny devices in fields from medicine to communications, including many that currently only exist in labs because batteries currently available on the market are either not small enough or lack sufficient energy to power them. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Seed bomb drones: UK-based start-up to plant one billion trees in one year using drones

01:09
Oxford-based start-up Biocarbon Engineering is planning to fight industrial deforestation by planting 1 billion trees a year using drones. Currently, 26 billions trees are cut down every year, while only 15 billions are replanted. The drones used by Biocarbon Engineering could solve the problem by making tree planting faster and cheaper. In a video made by the company, Biocarbon Engineering explains that the drones would first fly above a selected area, map its level of deforestation and report back its potential for reforestation. Then, automated planting drones carrying seed pods would fly one to two metres above the ground, following a pre-determined planting pattern, and fire germinated seeds into the soil. A small pressurized canister would provide the necessary propulsive force for the seed pods to easily penetrate the soil surface. The seed pods, filled with nutritious hydrogel to reduce the force of the seed’s impact with the soil, would then break open upon impact and allow the germinated seeds to grow. According to the Independent, one drone is able to plant 10 seeds per minute. With two operators controlling multiple drones, 36,000 trees could be planted in a single day. Biocarbon Engineering hopes to have the system fully working by the end of the summer. According to the Independent, the drone system is not as good as hand-sowing, but it’s much quicker and less expensive than traditional planting systems. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Driverless cars: Driver assist tech is putting autonomous cars in the driving seat - TomoNews

02:49
LOS ANGELES — A future in which self-driving vehicles travel our roads is edging closer as automakers introduce an ever-increasing range of innovations to their cars. Today’s cars are smarter than ever and some are capable of driving by themselves for long stretches, the Globe and Mail reported. The use of radar, sonar and camera technology has seen cars make great advances in recent years, with even standard models now offering assistance to help drivers stay in their lane, avoid accidents and warn of blind-spot obstacles. Some cars, like the BMW 7 Series can even be parked from outside the vehicle, simply by pressing a key fob. This animation explains how the technology present in today’s cars is paving the way for a future where fully autonomous self-driving cars are a reality. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Panama Papers: How do offshore shell companies work? - TomoNews

01:55
PANAMA CITY — An anonymous person from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, has leaked millions of documents describing how some of the world's richest hide money in offshore havens. Although the spotlight is currently on Panama, tax havens like Panama exist all over the world. People use them to circumvent regulations that protect transparency, as well as to avoid paying taxes in their home countries. Shell companies are often established in cities and countries that have lax rules governing transparency and financial disclosure, or more lenient criminal laws. Using tax havens isn't always about paying less taxes. Wealth isn't necessarily kept within tax haven countries. Often such places only serve as addresses for shell companies, which exist solely on paper, and are created for as little as US$1,000, reported Vice in a 2014 article. On paper, these shell companies act as the intermediaries that own the wealth, whether that asset is a painting or a Swiss bank account. Because of the complex organizational structure of these shell companies, it's very difficult to figure out who a company actually belongs to. Setting up a shell company is not illegal and its existence is not always for a nefarious reason. A shell company may be established as a way to for one to save up funds to open a business. It may also act as a front for a project that a well-known company wants to keep from the public's eye until it's ready. According to Vox, Apple for example, may have created a shell company called SixtyEight Research as a front for a car project. However, these shells are often used as tax or legal loopholes, as setting up a shell company doesn't require much identification, which allows their ultimate owners to evade scrutiny. UC Berkeley economics professor Gabriel Zucman estimates that there is least US$7.6 trillion kept in offshore tax havens. However, due to the nature of tax havens, it's difficult to know for sure what the true amount is. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sand hole collapse: newlywed's body found buried at beach due to excessive hole digging - TomoNews

05:32
OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND — Digging holes in the sand is just part of a day at the beach, but for a newlywed woman on vacation, a deep hole in the dark quickly became her grave. Texas woman Ashley O'Connor, 30, was last spotted walking around on the beach sometime after 2 a.m. on July 31. The next morning around 6:30 a.m., beachgoers spotted a limp arm sticking out of the sand and reported it to authorities. After rescue crews cordoned off the area and dug up the body, it was later identified as O'Connor's. In Ocean City, posted beach regulations stipulate holes must not be dug more than knee-deep of the smallest person in the group. An Ocean City beach patrol officer told CBS News affiliate WJZ that holes dug in the sand can quickly cave in and collapse, burying unsuspecting victims because "the pressure of it is very, very difficult to get out." Currently, investigators do not suspect any foul play. It is not known who dug the hole and carelessly left it behind. WJZ reports that globally, 31 people have died from similar sand traps over the past decade. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Plastic in the ocean: Young fish are dying from eating microplastics like it’s junk food - TomoNew

01:38
UPPSALA, SWEDEN — About 8 million tonnes of plastic are leaked into the ocean annually, and its impact on the fragile underwater ecosystem has scientists worried. The BBC reports that a new study from Sweden’s Uppsala University has found that young fish are eating microplastic like junk food — and it’s killing them. Microplastic particles result from the fragmentation of large plastic waste, or from tiny manufactured plastic, such as microbeads in cosmetic products. Measuring less than 5 millimeters across, the particles flow through waterways and into the ocean, accumulating in shallow coastal areas. Larval perch that normally feed on plankton have been found to be actively choosing the microplastic as food. This has resulted in their stunted growth and sudden disregard for the smell of predators. The ability to respond to the smell of predators and flee is typically innate in young fish. When placed in tanks with their natural predator, perch that ate plastic were preyed upon four times faster than those that did not. All were dead within 48 hours, reports the Deccan Chronicle. Scientists warn that the harmful effects of plastic is not limited to fish, and may be felt throughout the food chain. The study, published in the journal ‘Science’, is an important step in understanding the silent threat that plastic wastes poses on marine creatures. According to Chemistry World, the U.S. has already put a ban on the production of microbeads in personal care products, effective July 2017. Pressure is building for other countries, especially in Europe, to follow suit. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
